The celebrations stared on June 28th in 1969. It stemmed from the civil rights struggle. It all began to honor the Stonewall riots after police officers raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in New York City. In the years following, as civil rights activism spread, the rainbow flag was born in 1978. It was created by Harvey Milk, a San Francisco city supervisor, who was the first openly gay man to be elected for public office in California.
